After my bilateral mastectomy, I just wanted to feel like myself again and be comfortable. I really needed some wardrobe essentials.
This is how The Busted Tank® was born.
I was diagnosed with DCIS (an early stage of breast cancer) after my routine mammogram in April 2017. I was 45 years old. I underwent 2 lumpectomies in the following weeks - the second still with positive margins for DCIS. I was told I needed a mastectomy of my right breast. I was stunned. I just wanted to put this all behind me and focus on staying healthy for myself and my young family. After much deliberation of how to move forward, I opted for a bilateral mastectomy in June 2017. I chose not to have any reconstruction and was at peace with my decision although I still longed to feel like my old self again. It was a struggle for me to find anything comfortable to wear which also had a faux breast appearance. Nothing really fit my ideal.
My upper torso was still very sensitive to the touch and wearing a bra was
not an option for me during my normal, busy day.
I also felt I had at least earned the right to never put on a typical bra again!
I sewed many different shirt and padding designs at home until I finally realized that a simple design was also the coziest design. I envisioned making a comfortable, affordable and convenient shirt for every woman going through this dilemma, and with the loving support of my family, I am thrilled to bring my idea to fruition.
